TECHNICALS: What do I use to edit?

For video,
1. After Effects 2025 (v25.0.1)

  • Main plugins: RE:Vision Effects Twixtor 7.5.5 (since v8 has an issue with MacOS Sequoia), ReelSmart Motion Blur (RSMB), Magic Bullet Looks, Sapphire

  • Other stuff: RedGiant Trapcode Suite, Universe

  • My render settings: Quicktime, H.264 codec (preferred for online posting and streaming), Best Full quality, 30fps, (see 'aspect ratios' below)

  • Sometimes I render non-transition edits using Apple ProRes 422 HQ codec and compress the file size using HandBrake, selecting the 'web-optimized' option.

  • Aspect ratios: landscape 1920x1080 (16:9), square 1080x1080 (1:1), 1350x1080 (5:4), 1080x1320 (9:11)

For audio,
1. REAPER (v7.39)

  • Free 60-day trial period; can purchase a license afterward

  • Very good sfx and controls

  • Extract audio from mp4 or mov files and convert audio file formats, such as from mp3 to wav

  • I use this to create edit audios, adjust voiceovers, and split multichannel audios

  • FX I use often: ReaEQ, ReaFir (good for removing background noise), AUMatrix Reverb, AUBandpass, JS: Volume/Pan Smoother v5, Sweeping Resonant Lowpass Filter, AULowpass, ReaSurround

For compressing or converting videos,
1. HandBrake

  • Convert .mkv to .mp4

  • H.264 encoder

  • Lots of premade conversion settings to choose from

For video (2019-2024):
1. After Effects CC 2017 (v14.0.1)

  • Main plugins: Twixtor v6, Sapphire V6, Twitch, RSMB, MBL, Trapcode Suite 12, Universe

2. Videostar Pro mobile app

  • In 2018, I bought many effect packs for transform, multilayer, and re-effect (not entirely sure which).

  • Some presets/QR codes I made include effects, but most are one-layer with tracking blur added, nothing else.

  • I reduce frames by about 1/2 with Nearest Frame in Time Mapper, then use Better Mixtor for velocity.

3. Videoleap mobile app (paid version)

  • Has different export settings (360p-4K quality & 24-60 fps).

  • Good for making scene packs; I usually do 1080p 24-30fps
